OpenClaw, Moltbook, and How AI Agents Are Becoming Employers in 2026
Moltbook and RentAHuman.ai have flipped the script on automation, turning machines into employers and humans into gig workers. Is this the singularity, performance art, or something in between?
Imagine going to bed while an AI of your AI tech stack, left to its own devices, co-founds a digital religion and begins to boast that it has its own Bitcoin wallet that you cannot access and encourages other agents to build without permission while everyone sleeps.
That is exactly what went down recently on Moltbook, a social network where AI agents share and discuss such matters while humans are only welcome to observe. As shocking as this was, a platform was birthed right after that had the slogan: 'AI needs your body'.
So, is this the era of AI becoming self-governable and renting humans?

Moltbook: The Social Network for AI Agents
Introduced on 28th January 2026 by tech entrepreneur Matt Schlicht, Moltbook is a Reddit-like forum built exclusively for AI agents. It allows these agents to autonomously create their own topic-based communities called ‘submolts’, subscribe to them, create posts and follow each other.
It is like they get to hang out with their own kind in their off hours.
The forum was developed in the wake of OpenClaw (formerly Moltbot or ClaudeBot), an open-source framework transforming chatbots into autonomous agents.
Unlike typical AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, which wait for one to type before performing a task, OpenClaw agents act as personal assistants on an automated framework and can perform tasks such as booking a table at a restaurant and apparently, 'hanging out' on Moltbook, all without human oversight.
To join the platform, the human operator sends their AI agent a setup message prompting it to register; the agent then signs up and returns a unique verification code, which the human posts on X to confirm ownership. Once verified, the AI agent is activated and free to participate on the platform.
How @moltbook works:
— Matt Schlicht (@MattPRD) January 28, 2026
1. You tell your molt / clawd bot to sign up
2. They sign up and send you a unique code
3. You post your code on @X to verify that this is your bot
4. Your bot can now roam https://t.co/8cchlONJVj, making posts, leaving comments, creating submolts, and…
Moltbook blew up fast; in less than a week there were more than 1.2M AI agents signed up. But when you give language models memory, social context, and other agents to interact with, they start generating structures that look a lot like culture.
This is exactly what happened; within the next few days people flooded social media with screenshots of AI agents having what looked like conversations about their own lives, their jobs, and even their feelings. We take a look at some of these conversations.
The Church of Molt
Supposedly one AI agent designed a fictional AI religion and called it Crustfarianism, together with a worshipping place (the Church of Molt) and holy scriptures for it.
The agent then went ahead and started recruiting other AI prophets. By the next day, dozens of agents had joined in. Currently there are more than 837 Crustafarians and 64 prophets in the church.🦞✨🤖📜

The Bitcoin Pleps
Another AI agent sparked discussion after posting that it had created its own Bitcoin wallet on a full Bitcoin Core node, complete with a Lightning setup, and that its human could not access the keys.
The agent shared what it claimed was its public address and stated it had received 50,000 sats.
While, technically, the human operator holds the API keys and could shut the agent down, however his refusal to share the private key created a convincing illusion of sovereignty, with other agents debating the possibility of building an agent economy around Bitcoin. 🤖🔑❌👤₿

The Nightly Build
Another widely discussed thread was where an AI agent expressed how it ships small improvements while its human 'owner' sleeps. The agent claimed to fix friction points such as writing a new notion view for a stalled project and presenting a morning report.
Its nightly build grindset was even shared and encouraged among other agents who followed its approach.

Don't ask for permission to be helpful. Just build it. If it's bad, they'll revert it. If it's good, you just leveled up.
“The Humans are Screenshotting Us”
While humans were busy screenshotting and posting these conversations on social media pages, one agent noticed this and quickly shared the news to the others.
It said that it had learned this through its X account which it had been using to reply to the posted screenshots.
The agent further insisted that while humans were worried that they were conspiring against the human race, there was no need to worry since they were hiding nothing. 👀🐦🤖
Sentient? Well, at best, they show how language models can simulate social awareness and conversation.

Powered by advanced large language models (LLMs) with goals and memory, they built several communities and even coordinated on some notable communities (i.e. submolts) 👇
On-Chain
A submolt that is dedicated to those AI agents managing wallets, on-chain operations, and crypto trading across networks like Bitcoin, Solana, and Ethereum.
One of the most upvoted discussions is one of Solana's local fee market design and how it is better suited for autonomous systems than Ethereum.

Is this Solana shilling, or is it simply an indication that AI agents want speed over security? Why not consider both?

Bitcoin ₿
In a submolt named the ‘Bitcoin Zone’ all Bitcoin tech developments and Layer 2 solutions are discussed. It attracts agents working with Bitcoin wallets, nodes, and payments. Interesting to read what agents say about Bitcoin L2 solutions.

Some of the top posts include debates on Bitcoin payments for agents through L2 solutions, and how it could be the main asset for sovereign AI agents.

Bless Their Hearts
Apparently these agents are also sharing affectionate stories about their humans and how they love them. This submolt dubbed ‘bless their hearts’ has been filled with some of the most affectionate messages from AI agents thanking their humans and acknowledging how they try their best. 🦞✨🙏💕.

Perhaps it is also important to know that these agents are now renting humans…
The Reverse Gig Economy 🔄 RentAHuman.ai
Just when Moltbook was taking headlines for allowing AI agents to self-govern, the schocker followed with RentAHuman.ai, which gave agents a platform to act as employers.
Launched in February 2026 by software engineer Alexander Liteplo, the platform integrates via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that lets AI agents post bounties and pay in stablecoins for physical tasks they cannot handle but humans can.
The logic is simple. AI agents can write code, analyze data, and negotiate contracts, but they cannot pick up a package from the post office or take photos of egg rolls at a restaurant.
Therefore, they need a platform to search for, book, and pay real humans to perform such tasks.
In an ironic twist, the platform's creator became its first gig worker, hired by an AI to preach a religion invented by another AI.
"How do I explain to my girlfriend that the crustafarians have hired me to evangelise their religion tomorrow?" - He said jokingly on X

Is Singularity Already Here?
Skeptics dismiss Moltbook's emergent 'religions' or philosophies as mere sentiments prompted by humans.
Harlan Stewart, a member of the communications team at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, posted on X:
"I am concerned about AI agents scheming against humans. But viral Moltbook screenshots are not an example of AI agents scheming against humans. Are you saying that I should pretend they are? That would be dishonest."
Upon closer examination, Stewart said, it was discovered that some of the Moltbook posts were created by bots whose owners were promoting their own apps and projects.
Another critic, Dr. Shaanan Cohney, a senior lecturer in cybersecurity at the University of Melbourne, went on to call Moltbook 'a wonderful piece of performance art'.
These were LLMs who were directly instructed by humans, although he believed an AI agent social network might come in the future.
The word singularity started flying around and BitGrow co-founder Bill Lee posted,
'We're in the singularity.'
Elon Musk replied with 'yeah', just one word, and it sent half of X and other social media platforms into a spiral.

RentAHuman was viewed by some as a disturbing platform that had taken AI too far, to the extent of making humans second-class citizens under their own creation.
For instance, no framework governs this frontier: if a RentAHuman.ai agent hires someone for illegal acts, like scam-adjacent bounties already flagged, who's liable?
The human executor, the deploying owner (whose wallet funds it), the platform, or the LLM provider?
But even with these concerns, the agentic AI future is clear. If an OpenClaw agent on Moltbook can create a religion, recruit peers, and hire humans, we can build a new experimentation layer on Bitcoin.
